IPL is a light-based treatment that plastic surgeons use for treating a variety of skin conditions. Most treatments are performed to remove unwanted pigmentation in the patient’s skin.
The IPL photofacial selectively removes vascular birthmarks, lesions, broken capillaries and age spots with ultra-precise pulses of light. This procedure is also known as “intense pulsed light” or “intelligent pulsed light.” An IPL device can also be used for hair removal.
Who is a candidate for the IPL Photofacial?
Men and women with different forms of skin discoloration can often benefit from treatment with IPL. Those with fair skin are considered the best candidates.
We may recommend IPL for treating the following skin conditions:
- Uneven skin tone
- Port wine stains
- Broken capillaries
- Vascular birthmarks
- Red or brown pigmentation/discoloration
- Unwanted body hair
These conditions can be present on different areas of the body such as the face, chest, or hands.
How the IPL Photofacial Works
The IPL photofacial treatment selectively damages underlying blood vessels and melanin, prompting your body’s healing response to gradually remove discoloration. Clearance of the pigment and vessels provides clearer and more attractive skin.
The procedure requires about 45 minutes. Pulses of light are applied in a uniform pattern on your skin. For best results, we may recommend a series of IPL sessions.
What to Expect After Your IPL Photofacial
You should be able to return to your normal routine right away. You might exhibit some mild redness, but makeup can help conceal it. There are side effects that are possible with IPL but with proper energy settings, the risk for these side effects is minimal. Possible adverse events include hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, swelling and blistering. Ask one of our staff members for more information if you are concerned about these possibilities.
